Kenny / Canie -

The Kenny/Canie / Brennan Family of Ottawa, Canada, Eastern Ontario, and Gatineau Valley, Québec - History is being compiled by Bob Ranger - - - this website is maintained at Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York, USA. Updated: February 1, 2019.

Until recently, our great grandmother, Julia Kenny (m James Brennan, m Albert Milks), had been hard to find information about. Thanks to Wendy Bannister Stewart of Vancouver who discovered the key to information about Kenny and its alternate spellings. It often happens that school and church officials will assign a different spelling to a name to keep the various families straight. Ordinarily this is not a major problem, but when you change the first letter, then it becomes one, which is the case in the present delemma. The alternate spellings of Kenny include: Canie, Cainie, Quenny, Kainy, and probably others we haven't found yet.

We know that our great grandmother was a hardy Canadian woman who loved her hockey. She was called "Grandma Milks" and, we've been told, was either full-blood, half, or quarter Indian, depending upon who's doing the telling. From the stories we heard in childhood, and judging from her picture (scroll down), we would guess her to be quarter or half Indian. If this is true, we would like to know more about her Indian ancestry. Algonquian and Iroquois are both represended in the area.
